When you come to see me, a non-diet Dietitian, I am less concerned with your weight and more concerned with your biochemical markers like blood pressure, fasting sugars and blood fats. I am curious about your relationship with your body, and how this effects your food choices.
Questions a non-diet Dietitian might ask
Are you getting adequate sleep?
Are you eating out with friends in social settings?
Do you eat differently when you are alone compared to when you are around people?
Do you restrict any food groups?
Have you ever been on a diet, if so which ones?
I will spend an hour exploring these topics. Sometimes, we may go off topic. Often, there will be tears, because food and body image is emotional, and delicate, and complicated.
Expect that the journey will take time, and won’t be an easy one.
In my opinion, the easy way isn’t always the right way. But the difficult things are definitely worth pursuing.
If you have become collateral damage to the diet industry, there’s never been a better time to consider an alternative. What have you got to lose?
There is much to gain. Imagine what you could dedicate time to if you aren’t calculating calories in your head all day?
